community work

founding director and illustrator at cubby

fundraising + mutual aid, June 2020 – present

a project that provides custom illustrations in exchange for donations. all commission fees go towards BIPoC mutual aid and education funds, individual Black folks seeking short-term financial support, and Black-led organizations fighting systemic racism. $19,000 raised to date.

I illustrate for cubby, and I also help with all of the management that keeps us running. on top of daily maintenance tasks, this involves a lot of writing and thinking: we’re constantly redesigning and adjusting our model to meet community needs, and to make sure that cubby is ethical in its research, operations, and impact. we recently launched a microgrant program in order to fund essential tech needs, and are always looking into new ways to provide direct support to BIPoC folks.

grant director + writer for occupy pomona

emergency mutual aid fund, March – August 2020

a student-run emergency mutual aid fund for Pomona College community members facing hardships caused by the Covid-19 crisis. $170,000 distributed in need-based grants for housing insecurity, food insecurity, unexpected medical bills, providing for family members and loved ones, and other needs.

I helped write and assemble our grant application and evaluation process, which doubled as a resource hub. I also helped design the fundraising campaign that allowed us to gather funds.
